Each company should carry out a risk assessment which will then identify the provision for First Aid within the workplace.
Some Common Factors To Consider
- The nature of the business
- The size of the building and the number of personnel
- Special risks or processes
- The remoteness of the site from medical care services
- Accident records and history
Guidance
The HSE have produced a table for guidance which shows the category of risk for the number of people employed at each location and then provides a suggested number of first aid personnel:
Lower Risk
- Less than 50: At least 1 Appointed Person, e.g. shop, office.
- More than 100: At least 1 First Aider. 1 additional First Aider per 100.
Medium Risk
- Less than 20: At least 1 Appointed Person e.g. Light engineering, food processing, warehouse.
- More than 100: At least 1 First Aider per 50. 1 Additional First Aider per 100.
High Risk
- Less than 5: At least 1 Appointed Person, e.g. construction, chemical manufacturer, dangerous machinery.
- More than 50: At least 1 First Aider. 1 additional First Aider per 50.
