Legislation

The Disability Discrimination Act 1995 had a phased introduction, which was in 3 parts.

This risk assessment of workplace addresses mainly Part 3 of the Legislation, physical barriers to disabled access to services provided. Part 2 of the legislation is also considered where there are direct employment issues.

The three parts are:

Part 1

Since December 1996, it has been unlawful for service providers to treat disabled persons less favourably for a reason related to their disability.

Part 2

Since October 1999, service providers have to make "reasonable adjustments" for disabled persons, such as providing extra help or making changes to the way in which services are provided.

Part 3

Since October 2004, service providers have to make "reasonable adjustments" to the physical features of their premises in order to overcome physical barriers to access by disabled persons.

Methodology

Workplace Fire & Safety Ltd will conduct a visual assessment of your premises in terms of suitability and/or deficiencies in respect of access for disabled people and legislation appertaining to disabled access, taking into account the Disability Discrimination Act, Part M of the Building Regulations and BS8300, the British Standards Institute's guide to best practice for disability access, BS5810 Code of Practice - Access to Buildings for the Disabled.

The assessment will outline, with recommendations, what should be implemented to ensure compliance with the relevant legislation.
