Asbestos Risk Assessment
Book NowLegislation
Much has been done to control the risk from asbestos. The use, supply and importation of asbestos and asbestos products has been banned for all but a few exceptions by the Asbestos (Prohibition) Regulations. Work with asbestos generally requires a licence and the use of strict control measures, including personal protective equipment such as respirators. The fact that a wide range of people now have the potential to be exposed to asbestos - particularly workers involved in building maintenance - led to the latest revision of the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (May 2004) which placed a duty on those responsible for commercial premises to manage the asbestos contained in them.
Asbestos surveys often have to be completed quickly at the request of your insurance provider, the HSE or a landlord.
Methodology
There are 3 types of asbestos assessment which Workplace Fire & Safety Ltd undertake:
Type 1
This survey identifies the presence, type and extent of suspected asbestos containing materials on site, including an assessment of their condition. No samples are taken.
Type 2
This is the most common type of survey and comprises a sampling, identification and assessment survey. Samples of materials that are likely to contain asbestos are taken from all accessible areas. Samples are then sent for testing to confirm the asbestos content of the samples.
Type 3
Full access, sampling and identification survey that will include intrusion into sealed voids, under floors, in ducts and enclosed spaces and all other more inaccessible areas. This type of survey is usually associated with projects involving demolition or prior to refurbishment.
On Completion of Any Assessment
The client receives the following:
- A comprehensive report detailing whether the site contains asbestos and where it is, or is presumed to be.
- A survey report containing photographs of the areas sampled.
- Recommendations on what you should do next.
- An asbestos register to identify areas and monitor the action plan.
