Fire Doors
In order to allow persons to evacuate from buildings in the event of fire, doors on the means of escape routes must satisfy certain criteria to allow persons to easily pass through them.
Generally, this means that the doors must be unobstructed and easily openable without the use of a key.
Doors fitted within fire resistant walls should comprise of a fire resistant doorset, i.e. door and frame conforming to BS 476: part 22 and or 31.
All hardware such as hinges, screws and bolts should be of high melting points (min 800 degrees centigrade) and of sufficient strength to carry the load. Three hinges are normally fitted to fire doors. A self closing device fitted should cause the door to close fully onto the rebates at a controlled speed. Double doors should have a plain meeting stile or, if rebated, be fitted with a selector device to ensure the doors close in the correct order.
If automatic release mechanisms are fitted, only automatic release mechanisms that comply with BS 5839: Part 3 should be used.
A notice should be fixed to either side of the door stating 'Fire Door - Keep Shut'.
The standard of fire resistance of doors can be improved by the use of intumescent materials on the edges of doors and/or frames.
