Fire Safety In The Home
What To Do If A Fire Starts
The main thing to do is try not to panic.
- If possible close the door to the fire. It will delay the spread of the fire and smoke.
- Touch the door with the back of your hand before opening it. Do not open the door if it is warm, this means there is a fire on the other side.
- Get everyone out as quickly as possible. Do not stop to pick up valuables or possessions.
- If there is smoke, crawl beneath it as the smoke rises and the air is clearer lower down.
- Dial 999 or 112 and ask for the Fire Brigade. Use a neighbour's telephone if necessary.
- Never go back into the house unless a fire officer tells you it is safe to do so.
Safety Tips
- Fit a smoke alarm and check it regularly.
- Make a fire action plan and make sure everyone knows it.
- Take care when cooking with hot oil.
- Never leave candles unattended.
- Make sure that cigarettes are stubbed out and safely disposed of.
- Never smoke in bed.
- Keep matches and lighters away from young children.
- Take care when you are tired or when you have been drinking.
